Oversized Vehicle Parking Permit Program & Regulations

Oversized vehicles can create safety hazards to pedestrians and other traffic by reducing visibility and travel lane width when parked on City's streets. A large number of City streets are already narrow and steep. Additionally, oversized vehicles can create a significant burden on the City's limited parking availability as they typically utilize more curb length than a standard vehicle parking space.

At the July 2, 2024, City Council Meeting, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 24-0006 which amends Manhattan Beach Municipal Code Chapter 14.46 and establishes that a permit is required to park oversized vehicles on City streets.

Beginning October 1, 2024, a resident or guest of a resident that desires to temporarily park an oversized vehicle on any street in the City of Manhattan Beach (with few exceptions listed below), will require a permit. If the oversized vehicle can be parked on the resident's property, a permit is not required.

PERMIT INFORMATION

If a resident or their guest would like to park an oversized vehicle (that exceeds one or more of the listed measurements above) on any City street, they will need a permit. If the oversized vehicle can be parked on the resident's property, a permit is not required.

Two types of permits will be available:

  • Annual permit for a resident owned oversized vehicle
  • Temporary permit for a resident's guest oversized vehicles

Both permit types must be applied for by a resident.

Information regarding the two permit types and their differences can be found below.

Electronic Application Process

In order to obtain a permit, residents will fill out an electronic application through the City's Citizen Self Service Portal. In addition to filling out the Oversized Vehicle Permit application, residents should be prepared to submit copies of the following documentation:

  1. Proof of Manhattan Beach residency:
    1.  A California driver’s license or California ID card; AND
    2.  Property tax bill, public utility bill, or current residential rental or lease agreement
  2. Proof of oversized vehicle registration from the California Department of Motor Vehicles or equivalent agency in another state, if applicable.
