The Manhattan Beach City Council will hold a Special Meeting on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, to discuss the use of the dune that is located in Sand Dune Park. This meeting was initially scheduled for the Regular City Council Meeting on Tuesday, April 20, 2010, but it was determined that more time was needed to explore all options and, therefore, a Special Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 13, 2010. The meeting will be entirely devoted to discussing the dune; including the results from the soil report, options for reopening the dune and providing direction to staff for implementation.
The public is encouraged to attend this meeting which will be held at the Joslyn Community Center Auditorium, 1601 Valley Drive, at 6:30 PM, Tuesday, April 13, 2010.
NEW INFORMATION
The public is also encouraged to arrive early (5:00 PM to 6:30 PM) to view a display of two design options for Sand Dune Park from the UCLA Extension Landscape Architecture Program. Working in small groups, students in the winter 2010 quarter of the UCLA Extension Program took on a redesign of Sand Dune Park. Their designs are based upon the desire for high-quality recreation in a healthy ecosystem, while minimizing impacts to the neighborhood. The public is invited to see the final design solutions for the park which range from restoration of the dune habitat to expanded educational and recreational opportunities for adults and children. A number of the students and the instructor will be on hand to explain their work and their reasoning behind it.
In this intermediate design class, Environmental Analysis and Planning, students investigate the natural, historical and cultural factors that impact land-use design and apply these methods to real-world problems. Kathleen Bullard is the instructor for the class and founding president of the Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden. She lives near the park.
Questions regarding this matter should be directed to either Richard Gill, Director of Parks and Recreation at (310) 802-5403 or Jim Arndt, Director of Public Works at (310) 802-5303.
