Starting Tuesday, July 6th, the streets to be slurry sealed are in the area bounded by: Sepulveda Boulevard to the east, Ardmore Avenue to the west and north, and Manhattan Beach Boulevard to the south (map). Cedar Avenue from Marine Avenue to 18th Street and 22nd Street from Sepulveda Boulevard to Cedar Avenue were excluded from last year’s slurry seal project due to water mains planned for those streets. Water main installation is currently underway and will be complete in time to include those streets in this year’s slurry sealing project. 17th Street from Ardmore Avenue to the westerly cul-de-sac and 18th Street from Ardmore Avenue to Flournoy Road will not be slurry sealed this year. Those streets are scheduled for more extensive rehabilitation in Fiscal Year 2010-11.
Slurry seal is a mixture of fine aggregates and emulsified asphalt spread in a thin layer over asphalt pavements. The process fill cracks, provides a new wearing surface and increases pavement life by mitigating water intrusion. The slurry seal is applied in liquid form and dries in approximately four hours depending on temperature and humidity. The process is performed through a one-day operation with minimal inconvenience to residents.
If you wish to know which day your street will be slurried, please consult the Contractor's schedule for a list of the street names and dates they will be working on.
It will be necessary to partially close the street. Signs will be posted on your street and other streets in this area calling for TEMPORARY NO PARKING between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Observe the date(s) on the NO PARKING/TOW AWAY signs carefully. Vehicles parked on posted streets will be towed!!!
We ask for your cooperation in parking your automobile in a location where it will not be necessary for you to drive along the affected streets during the slurry day. If you plan to use your car, please park outside the work area. We regret any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding.
Slurry sealing requires approximately three hours to harden before it can be driven on, depending on temperature and humidity. If you drive on the slurried streets before they are fully dried, the process will be less effective, and tar and gravel may be carried on your tires and deposited onto your driveway.
In order for the slurry sealing to be effective, it is necessary that the street be kept completely dry until the slurry has a chance to harden. If you allow the water from your lawn to flow over the top of the curb, the slurry sealant will be rendered ineffective.
The material used is of a brown color and can be very inviting to children. As it dries, it turns to a dark black and can only be removed from their hands and clothing with cleaning solvent available at a local automotive store.
Every effort will be made not to slurry seal your street on trash pick-up day. However, if your trash pick-up day is on the scheduled slurrying day, please place it at the curb the night before as it will be picked up prior to 7:00 a.m.
There will be some shedding of tiny rock for four (4) to six (6) weeks after application. This is normal for slurry seal and will be collected during street sweeping operations.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Ish Medrano, Project Manager at (310) 802-5357. Thank you for your cooperation in making this project a success!
