The City of Manhattan Beach awarded a new refuse contract to Waste Management which will begin on June 1, 2011.
Automation of the Sand Section: One of the largest changes with the new contract is the "automation" of the Sand Section. Currently, Sand Section properties utilize personal cans and carts for trash and the drivers manually empty the containers. With the new service, properties will receive automated carts from Waste Management which have wheels and attached lids; the carts attach to the collection trucks which lift the cart and empty the contents. Mailers were sent to property owners in April with instructions on how to place their order for new carts.
New Cart Distribution: Distribution of these carts in the Sand Section will take place on the property owner's collection day, either Tuesday, May 3, 2011 or Thursday, May 5, 2011. Information on services and pickup of old/unwanted cans will be delivered, as well as yellow "TAKE ME" stickers. These "TAKE ME" stickers need to be applied to all cans that the owner either no longer wants (getting rid of old personal cans) or any old Waste Management cans. Once the new carts are delivered, Waste Management will no longer service personal cans.
Property owners must set out the old/unwanted cans on Saturday, May 7, 2011 by 6:00 AM. Waste Management will collect all old/unwanted cans that have the "TAKE ME" sticker on them. Waste Management will not collect any cans that do not have the "TAKE ME" sticker.
Number of Homes: The following single and multi-family properties will receive new carts the first week of May:
*Tuesday, May 3, 2011: 1161 properties receive new carts
*Thursday, May 5, 2011: 1738 properties receive new carts
*Saturday, May 7, 2011: ALL SAND SECTION PROPERTIES' OLD/UNWANTED CANS COLLECTED
(with "TAKE ME" stickers on them)
A limited amount of follow up may take place on Wednesday and Friday to recover any missed homes from Tuesday and Thursday’s deliveries.
Hours: Cart delivery will take place between 8:00am- 6:00pm.
Vehicles: From the drop off location, we will have 4 smaller delivery vehicles (24 feet) that will be delivering carts to the community. In addition to the contracted cart delivery team, WM will have four 4 managers managing the field operations to ensure accuracy, customer satisfaction, and efficient service. Delivery of carts is not coordinated with the regular waste and recycling collection because old cans will
Field Customer Support/ Public Education: A member of the public support team will be in the City each day to assist with roll out and answer questions from property owners. Fliers with Customer Service information will be on hand if property owners need additional follow up with their order.
