Exhibition Dates: June 8 to July 12, 2012
Opening Reception: Friday, June 8 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Kit and Caboodle is a two-woman show of installation based artworks, by Edith Abeyta, and Joyce Dallal. Both artists create work with used personal items from multiple individuals as their medium; their artwork has a depth and richness in its visual symbolism that comes from a converging of individual and collective perspectives. The installation works in this sow exemplify this experience: “T-Shirt Doodle with Pelican Skeleton” by Edith Abeyta, and “Receptacle” by Joyce Dallal. Their process of art making contains two layers of actions. First, the artists collect donations of materials or scavenge objects from their everyday environment – in this case used t-shirts and old and broken toys. This action encourages communication and participation with others, adding a social context to the artwork. The second phase can be defined as “aesthetic recycling,” in which the collected materials merge with one another taking shape into a new form, which represents the specific meaning and concept of the artist. The completed installation is the product of personal vision and collectivity intertwined to make a new visual statement.
