The City’s annual street maintenance program is commencing this week. The City’s contractor, American Asphalt South, Inc., will be applying a “slurry seal” treatment on your street and/or other streets in your neighborhood. “Slurry Seal” is a mixture of liquid asphalt and sand applied to streets that will increase skid resistance, prolong pavement life by protecting the surface from ultraviolet rays, and seal all cracks, thereby reducing the likelihood of potholes.
It will be necessary to partially close streets while the work is being performed. Signs will be posted on calling for no parking between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The date and time of parking restrictions will be posted 72 hours in advance of work. We ask for your cooperation in parking your automobile in a location where it will not be necessary for you to drive along the affected streets during the slurry day. If you plan to use your car, please park outside the work area.
Slurry sealing requires approximately three hours to harden before it can be driven on, depending on temperature and humidity. If you drive on the slurried streets before they are fully dried, the process will be less effective, and tar and gravel may be carried on your tires and deposited onto your driveway. There will be some shedding of tiny rock for 4 to 6 weeks after application. This is normal for slurry seal and will be collected during street sweeping operations.
Every effort will be made not to slurry your street on trash pick-up day. However, if the slurry is scheduled for the same day as your trash pick-up, please place it at the curb the night before. It will be picked up prior to 7:00 a.m.
