Starting Monday, June 22nd, the section of the City's streets bounded by Sepulveda Boulevard to the west, Manhattan Beach Boulevard to the south, Marine Avenue to the north, and Aviation Boulevard to the east (see map (PDF)), will be re-coated with an asphalt slurry seal. Also included in this year’s project are:
*Lower Pier parking lots (north and south)
*Tennyson Place
*Parkview Avenue – Village Drive to end
*Village Drive – Parkview Avenue to Rosecrans Avenue
*Park Way – Parkview Avenue to Rosecrans Avenue
*Longfellow Avenue – Valley Drive to Ingleside Drive
*Market Place – Parkview Avenue to Rosecrans Avenue
*Manhattan Village Field Parking Lot
*Public Works Yard
Slurry sealing will increase skid resistance, prolong pavement life by protecting the surface from ultraviolet rays, and seal all cracks, thereby reducing the likelihood of potholes. This necessary preventive procedure will reduce future street maintenance costs.
It will be necessary to partially close the street. Signs will be posted on your street and other streets in this area calling for TEMPORARY NO PARKING between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Observe the date(s) on the NO PARKING/TOW AWAY signs carefully. Vehicles parked on posted streets will be towed!!!
We ask for your cooperation in parking your automobile in a location where it will not be necessary for you to drive along the affected streets during the slurry day. If you plan to use your car, please park outside the work area. We regret any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding.
Slurry sealing requires approximately three hours to harden before it can be driven on, depending on temperature and humidity. If you drive on the slurried streets before they are fully dried, the process will be less effective, and tar and gravel may be carried on your tires and deposited onto your driveway.
In order for the slurry sealing to be effective, it is necessary that the street be kept completely dry until the slurry has a chance to harden. If you allow the water from your lawn to flow over the top of the curb, the slurry sealant will be rendered ineffective.
The material used is of a brown color and can be very inviting to children. As it dries, it turns to a dark black and can only be removed from their hands and clothing with cleaning solvent available at a local automotive store.
Every effort will be made not to slurry seal your street on trash pick-up day. However, if your trash pick-up day is on the scheduled slurrying day, please place it at the curb the night before as it will be picked up prior to 7:00 AM.
There will be some shedding of tiny rock for four (4) to six (6) weeks after application. This is normal for slurry seal and will be collected during street sweeping operations.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call Mr. Ish Medrano, Project Manager at (310) 802-5357. Thank you for your cooperation in making this project a success!
