The Manhattan Beach Art Center and the City of Manhattan Beach present, BEEN THERE-DONE THAT-DOING THIS, featuring a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings executed by Jim Murray over the last four decades. Curated by Ann Martin, BEEN THERE-DONE THAT-DOING THIS will draw from three distinct series. Though seemingly different at first glance, they are in fact, united by a common commitment to a particular and personal imagery, that at its core, speaks consistently to the specificity of both time and place.
The series BEEN THERE, presents in text the early development and major influences that were set in place coming out the graduate program at Art Center College of Design. The series DONE THAT, highlights the first two series, the large scale photo realist figurative paintings from the years 1972 to 1985, as well as the more intimate charcoal and pastel landscape drawings from the years 1986 to 2005. The series DOING THIS, focuses on the most recent landscape paintings and drawings from the years 2005 to 2015. The latest works concentrate on the winter months in Yosemite National Park and current work from The Southwest.
One of the goals of this exhibition is to focus on the art, the artist and to seek out those basic issues that are common to all three bodies of work.
After graduating from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Jim Murray has been a resident of Manhattan Beach since 1972. He was tenured Associate Professor of Art as well as Gallery Director at Mount St. Mary’s College in Brentwood. He has taught at several colleges and universities in the region and is currently on faculty at the Palos Verdes Art Center where he continues to conduct a gallery/museum visitation class. He frequently lectures and curates exhibitions and has been exhibited in over a hundred exhibitions locally and nationally over these past four decades. Mr. Murray is a recipient of the California Arts Council’s Artists Fellowship in the Visual Arts and has chaired several boards and committees including the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art and the Art Advisory Council for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
