Volunteerism is a vital resource in Manhattan Beach. Volunteers allow the City to augment its workforce by enhancing the provision of services to the community. Residents who volunteer with the City not only help provide a richer quality of life for their community but they learn the intricacies of how a municipal government operates.

Each volunteer contributes unique skills to his or her assignment. This experience may also contribute to individual development and personal fulfillment and enhance job skills.

The City prides itself on recruiting the highest caliber volunteers and uses a formal screening process that includes completing an application form, fingerprinting, and a security check. This ensures the safety of our residents and helps maintain the integrity of our programs. Potential volunteers may be interviewed for the position for which they are applying.

Volunteer with Manhattan Beach Police Department

The Manhattan Beach Police "Volunteers in Policing" are a team of trained citizen volunteers who assist Police Department with non-enforcement duties and value-added services that allow Officers to focus on crime reduction.

Volunteers will acquire a working knowledge of the policies and procedures of the Manhattan Beach Police Department and become proficient in the specific requirements of the activity for which they have volunteered.

The mission of the Volunteers in Policing program is to serve as a support service to the Manhattan Beach Police Department, enhancing the effectiveness of community policing through the provision of administrative and support services.

Opportunities for Older Adults

Position	Commitment Desired	Description	Location
Group Leaders (Older Adults Program)	Weekly, bi-weekly or monthly	Work with the Older Adults Program staff to coordinate and lead new group activities for Older Adults in your particular area of interest or expertise. Examples: sing-a-longs, games, book club, travelogue, musical instrument instruction, skill sharing, hobbies, computer classes, etc.	Joslyn Community Center
Senior Advisory Committee (SAC) – Ad Hoc Committee Participation	Be available at least 1 to 2 times per month, as specified by the Chair of the SAC Ad Hoc Committee.	The Senior Advisory Committee has several opportunities for volunteers to participate on subcommittees or Ad Hoc committees, which may include, but are not limited to: Attend Senior Advisory Committee meetings or speak with Older Adult Program Staff for further information.	Senior Advisory Committee meetings take place on the second Tuesday of each month, at 1:00 PM at the Joslyn Community Center
On-Call Clerical Volunteers	Be available on-call for city personnel to contact you when assistance is needed in various departments at City Hall.	Answering phones, stuffing envelopes, labeling envelopes, filing, etc.	City Hall, Joslyn Center or other location.
Special Event Volunteers	Be available on-call for city personnel to contact when assistance is needed at various citywide special events (usually, but not always, on weekends) including: Hometown Fair Halloween Carnival Pumpkin Races Older Adult Health Fair Flu Shot Clinics	Duties vary, but often include standing for extended periods of time.
