EXPERIENCING DISCOLORED WATER?
If you suddenly experience discolored water, there is likely some activity that has disturbed the direction or rate of flow in the City water main, which has caused scour of the main water line. This can include:
  • Use of a fire hydrant
  • A fire hydrant that has been hit
  • Exercising water valves (maintenance)
  • Water system flushing (maintenance)
  • Water main break

The discoloration is simply an aesthetic issue, and does not present a health concern.

If you experience this problem, the easiest way to eliminate the discolored water from your system is to run as many cold water faucets, including bath tubs, sinks, and outside spigots, as possible at the same time. This will clear out any color, which may have found its way into your service line. DO NOT turn on your hot water, as this will direct discolored water into your hot water tank.

If the problem does not clear up within 10 minutes, please contact the Public Works Department at (310) 802-5304, Monday – Thursday between 7:30 AM and 5:00 PM, or call Dispatch after hours at (310) 545-4566 to be put in touch with our on-call Water Maintenance staff. Keep in mind that most kitchen and bathroom faucets have screens or filters built into them and will likely require cleaning if debris is present to ensure proper flow.
