The Manhattan Beach Art Center is pleased to present A Student Named Art, a short film directed and produced by Miriam Sachs. A Student Named Art addresses the budget-cuts in classrooms and after schools programs. Sachs was inspired to create the film from her role with a non-profit organization called Get Lit-Words Ignite founded in 2006 by Diane Luby Lane. Get Lit introduces a revolutionary poetic movement in Los Angeles that engages at risk-youth in literature by creating their own futures through art and social consciousness. Miriam Sachs activism lead her to create short films about the changes she wants to see. Her vision is to provide more art programming into schools and inspire the necessity of creating and expressing themselves through visual poetry. Sachs and collaborators used conceptual framework through camera work, lighting, paint and materials as a way to personify art.
Miriam Sachs is a senior at Mira Costa High School and has won first place in the Student Voices filmmaking contest. Sachs is a filmmaker, poet, and writer. Her short film, “Spoons,” was selected to screen at the 2015 Big Pride Los Angeles Film Festival as well as the 2016 Springfield Massachusetts LGBT Film Festival. She writes, directs, and produces films ranging from documentaries and public service announcements to surrealist narratives. She has presented her stop motion project, “A Student Named Art,” at the 2016 Student Voices Summit and Screening, hosted by Christopher Coppola at the San Francisco Art Institute. Her multimedia piece, “Body,” won Best Interactive at the 2015 South Bay Student Video Festival.
