The project will provide a protected pedestrian crossing north of Rosecrans Avenue as a solution to the ongoing pedestrian safety issues at Highland and 38th Street. Improvements include a high visibility crosswalk with pedestrian activated flashing beacons, in-pavement lighting, a landscaped center median with median refuge for pedestrians, new pedestrian ramps on all corners, and overhead intersection street lighting. The median along Rosecrans Avenue just east of Highland Avenue
will also be modified to create space to facilitate the shifting of the two eastbound vehicle travel lanes slightly to the north, which will allow for the placement of an eastbound striped bike lane between Highland Avenue and Alma Avenue.
The contractor, ACCI is scheduled to commence construction on April 24, 2017 with completion anticipated by May 26, 2017. The contractor will be required to maintain access to residences and businesses in the work area. At times, access along portions of the street and sidewalk may be limited due to construction and safety reasons. All work will take place during normal City construction hours (7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays).
For questions or concerns regarding the project, please contact the City's project engineer, Tim Birthisel at (310) 802-5368.
