All the time I was growing up – and I suspect that while you were too – the legendary gunfighters of the Old West were household names. Every little kid recognized Wild Bill Hickok, Bat Masterson, and Wyatt Earp from movies and television shows.

“And long may his story be told.”

But the stories we were told always seemed to be about a solitary man--righteous, moral, taciturn, enforcing the law without fear or favor, and using lethal force only when he couldn’t avoid it. The Old West was where “men were men, and women were glad of it.” The marshal, the sheriff, the gunfighter saved the day and often saved the girl, but he never was involved in a long-term relationship with a woman. The law was his love.

Really?.......... No, of course not.

While their legends were fiction (sometimes self-created; often shaped to meet Hollywood’s needs and hypocritical moral standards), their real lives were much richer than their myths – failures as well as successes; vices as well as virtues; working both sides of the law; loving and hating, being loved and being hated; talented and fl awed; merciful sometimes, stone cold killers other times.

If you have nothing better to do in these pandemic stay-at-home days, you might like to join Gary Hartzell online on Monday, June 15, 2020, at 11:00 AM, to enjoy a closer look into the lives and loves of some of our childhood heroes. Gunfighters and the circus women, actresses, farmers’ daughters, working girls, socialites and schoolteachers they shared their lives with (well, parts of their lives, anyway). It should be fun!
