Climate Ready MB: Climate Action Workshop

A core component of the Climate Ready Manhattan Beach Initiative is a Climate Action and Adaptation Plan for reducing the city’s emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) that are contributing to global climate change. The city has developed multiple community-wide GHG inventories going back as far as 2005, and is currently in the process of forecasting future emissions and setting science-based targets that align with California’s regulatory mandates and international best practice. Scenarios are being developed to determine how emissions can be reduced from contributing sectors (e.g., energy, transportation, waste disposal, and water consumption) to achieve these targets.

 

For the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, the City is also assessing the city’s exposure and vulnerability to a range of climate change hazards that are expected through the end of this century. Complementing the sea-level rise presentations from recent workshops, the assessment is currently examining the potential effects of extreme heat days, more intense storms, more severe droughts, and worsening air quality.

 

Engaging all voices of the community and stakeholders throughout the process of this project is key to ensuring long-term success. The objectives of this meeting are to:
  • Provide an overview of the community’s GHG emissions from transportation, energy, solid waste, water and wastewater
  • Explain how a target is being developed for the City’s community-wide GHG emissionsClimate Ready MB Logo
  • Explain the different strategies that the City has available to achieve these targets
  • Present preliminary findings from the City’s climate change vulnerability assessment
  • Provide opportunities for people to ask questions and get answers
  • Gather input from residents and visitors on the preferred strategies for reducing Manhattan Beach’s GHG emissions
  • Share next steps and future opportunities for public engagement
