Sustainability Task Force

A Community Group to Protect the Environment

MB Sustainability Task Force April 2018

The Sustainability Task Force (STF) is composed of a diverse cross-section of Manhattan Beach’s community from business, scientific, nonprofit, environmental, and education fields with professional experience or demonstrated expertise in sustainability topics. STF members provide technical expertise and original research and analysis to help form initiatives and policy recommendations to the City Council regarding environmental sustainability issues.

Although the City is not accepting STF applications at this time, please continue to check our website for future opportunities that will be posted once they become available. To learn more information, please contact the Environmental Sustainability division at (310) 802-5508.

The City of Manhattan Beach opened applications for the City's current Sustainability Task Force (STF) in March 2018, initiating meetings on April 20, 2018 during Earth Month. The 2018 Sustainability Task Force is made up of 10 at-large community members, 10-15 staff members, and two Councilmembers. The community members were selected by an application process. Task force members serve the City in a technical working group to assist the City in the development of policies and programs related to a variety of topics including:

  • Climate action and energy
  • Low-impact development and sustainable building
  • Smart water management
  • Reducing plastic pollution
  • Greening City Hall
  • Climate adaptation and resiliency

Sustainability Youth Task Force

In September 2018, the City of Manhattan Beach formed the City's first Sustainability Youth Task Force (SYTF). The SYTF is comprised of a diverse group of students ranging in grades 5 – 12 representing the Manhattan Beach community, who share a passion for protecting the environment and supporting the City’s environmental policies and goals. Members were selected by the City’s Sustainability Task Force (STF) through a written application process. The Sustainability Youth Task Force is managed by members of the Sustainability Task Force and plays a vital role in introducing environmental programs in the community. SYTF members address issues such as plastic pollution, climate change, and water conservation. In Fall 2019, the City launched the second year of the SYTF, and doubled the amount of students participating.

The City’s previous Environmental Task Forces in 2008 and 2011 were volunteer groups of residents approved by City Council to develop programs that promote sustainable living and raise the community’s awareness on environmental stewardship. The Task Forces developed several exciting programs to help businesses, residents, schools and the City meet community-wide conservation goals. While the 2008 and 2011 Task Forces ended years ago, the City of Manhattan Beach started a new task force in 2018.

Thank You to the City's previous Environmental Task Forces!
The City congratulates both its inaugural 19-member Environmental Task Force, and its 2011 Environmental Task Force on a highly successful program. Both of these dedicated groups of community volunteers served for 18 months, and assisted the City in addressing several issue areas that are particularly important to our community. Environmental Task Force and City Council

The 2008 Environmental Task Force (PDF) was organized into four subcommittees, and they made recommendations to City Council in each of the following areas:

Development of a Climate Action Plan; Water Conservation and Storm Water Management Issues; Waste Reduction and Recycling; and Sustainable ("Green") Design.

2011 Environmental Task Force

City Council appointed ten residents, and two student liaisons, to the 2011 Environmental Task Force (PDF). The 2011 Environmental Task Force focused on energy efficiency and renewable energy; water conservation and sustainable landscaping; and zero waste goals, and created several free environmental programs designed to serve a functional purpose. Divided into two broad areas of Energy Efficiency and Water Conservation, these programs are targeted to households and businesses that want to take simple steps to reduce their energy and water use, with the added benefit of seeing a savings on electricity and water bills as well. The program recommendations were approved by City Council on October 4, 2011.
