Pre-Swim Team
The City of Manhattan Beach offers a preparation class for the MB Dolphins Swim Team. Swimmers must be able to swim 50 yards freestyle and backstroke without stopping and have some knowledge of breaststroke. This class is designed to work on endurance and stroke technique and most importantly to prepare swimmers for the MB Dolphins Swim Team. Pre-Swim Team is offered in the Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall sessions. Registration begins Monday, May 20, 2024 for Manhattan Beach residents and Monday, June 3, 2024 for Non-Manhattan Beach residents.
Please Note: For Fall 2024, Winter 2025, and Spring 2025 we are only taking participants off the waitlist that was generated during Summer 2024. The waitlist that was generated during Summer 2024 will be active until April 1, 2025 at which point, any participant who were not called or placed into the Pre-Swim Team, must re-register along with new participants.
This will also be the time that new participants can register for the Pre-Swim Team.
Small Group Swim Lessons Level 1 to 5
Small Group Swim Lessons are offered during the summer. Below are level descriptions for levels 1 through 5. Your child will be tested and placed into one of these levels on the first day of lessons.
Level 1 (Introduction to Water Skills)
For children three years and older, potty trained and able to be in the water without a parent. The purpose is to familiarize the child to the aquatic environment and to create a sound foundation for aquatic and safety skills. Learning Objectives:
- Enter and exit the water safely using the pool ladder
- Submerge mouth, nose and eyes
- Open eyes underwater, pick up a submerged object held at arm's length
- Show comfort maintaining a front float position while supported
- Swim on front using any combination of arm and leg actions while supported
- Discuss water safety rules
Level 2 (Fundamental Aquatic Skills)
For children four years and older, potty trained, who possess the skill level of a Level 1 Swimmer. The purpose is to expand on fundamental aquatic locomotion and safety skills. Learning Objectives:
- Enter water independently by jumping or stepping from the side
- Exit water independently using a ladder
- Open eyes underwater, pick up a submerged object in shallow water
- Demonstrate a front and back glide
- Swim on front and back using any combination of arm and leg actions while unsupported for 15 feet
- Discuss water safety rules
Level 3 (Stroke Development)
For children five years and older who must possess skills of a Level 2 Swimmer. The purpose is to build on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice. Learning Objectives:
- Submerge and retrieve an object from chest-deep water
- Demonstrate rotary breathing with the front crawl
- Demonstrate front and back glide
- Demonstrate back float
- Demonstrate front and back stroke for 15 yards
- Discuss water safety rules
Level 4 (Stroke Improvement)
For children six years and older who must possess skills of a Level 3 Swimmer. The purpose is to build student confidence and performance of the swimming strokes learned in level 3 by providing additional guided practice. Learning Objectives:
- Swim underwater
- Demonstrate front and back crawl, breaststroke and elementary backstroke for 15 yards
- Discuss water safety rules
Level 5 (Stroke Refinement)
For children seven years and older who must possess skills of a Level 4 Swimmer. The purpose is to build on the skills in Level 4 by providing additional guided practice. Learning Objectives:
- Swim underwater
- Demonstrate a flip turn while swimming front and back crawl
- Swim front and back crawl for 50 yards each
- Swim butterfly, breaststroke and elementary backstroke for 25 yards
- Discuss water safety rules
For children 6 months to 3 years old. Parent or guardian must participate in the water during each class with their child. Limit of one child per adult. Children must wear a swimming diaper. This class is not designed to teach your child to swim. Class is to help develop swimming readiness by leading parents and their children in water exploration activities with the objective of having fun and becoming comfortable in, on and around the water. Parent and Me swim classes are offered during the summer session only. Summer registration begins Monday, May 20, 2024.
A one-on-one learning environment for children or adults. Children must be at least 3 years old, potty trained and be able to be in the water without a parent. Private lessons are for all skill levels. Private lessons are available during the spring, summer and fall sessions.
Semi-Private Swim Lessons
Children must be between the ages of 4 to 6 years old, potty trained and able to be in the water without a parent. This class is designed for swimmers who are in levels 2 and 3. Each class will be limited to two children per instructor.
Jr. Guard Prep Class
This class is designed for ages 9 to 14 years old and is focused mainly on freestyle. The emphasis of this class is to meet the qualification for the Los Angeles County Jr. Lifeguard Program, 100 yards freestyle swim under 1:30, 1:40 or 1:50 minutes depending on their age. The Jr. Guard Prep Classes are offered during the fall, winter, and spring session.
Open to all boys and girls ages 8 to 10 who can swim 25 yards nonstop. Campers will enjoy the benefits of outdoor activities in and out of the water, learn some basic lifeguarding skills, and participate in hands-on-arts and crafts projects while making new friends and lifelong memories. Fee includes uniform (T-Shirt, shorts, sweatshirt) and field trips transportation to the beach on every Tuesday. No class 7/4.
Begg Pool Masters
January to December
6:00 AM to 7:00 AM
7:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Begg Pool Masters is designed to help swimmers improve fitness and/or train for specific goals and offer active support for a healthy lifestyle through friendship and camaraderie. Workouts are structured for all swimming abilities ranging from beginning lap swimmers to college athletes. We invite you to come and swim with us! The coach is Steve Hyde and you may register for this class online.
Water Aerobics
This class is designed for men and women who are looking to get in shape, for low impact cardiovascular exercise that will increase cardiovascular endurance and to meet new friends. Workout includes a warm-up, aerobic exercise, stretching exercises and relaxation exercises to increase flexibility. Classes are drop-in, so no registration is necessary. Knowing how to swim is not a prerequisite for participation in this class. For the current class schedule please call us at (310) 802-5448.
Lifeguard Training (LGT) Class
Gain the certifications and training to become a pool pro! Certificates include American Red Cross C.P.R. for the Professional Rescuer, AED and First Aid. Participants successfully completing this program will be qualified for lifeguard positions in Manhattan Beach and other public and private agencies. Be prepared to swim each class, bring a swim suit, towel, goggles, swim cap, pen/pencil and paper. LGT books will be available for loan but may be purchased for $35. Prerequisites: Be at least 15 years old by March 2025. Ability to swim 300 yards nonstop (front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke), tread water for 2 minutes and perform a brick tow test under 1:30.
- All patrons entering the facility during recreational/lap swim times are required to pay the facility admission fee, including spectators, except those seated in the bleachers area.
- Swim suit attire required
- Children not potty-trained must wear a swim diaper
- Children under age seven must be accompanied by an adult in the water at all times (four children maximum per one adult)
- Hair longer than shoulder length must be pulled back or a swim cap must be worn.
- Water toys and United States Coast Guard approved lifejackets may be used at the Pool Manager's discretion. Each individual wearing a United States Coast Guard lifejacket must be accompanied by an adult in the pool, within arms reach.
