TIME 4 ART is pleased to present
Sledgehammer.Bullet.Bomb
a solo exhibition by Los Angeles based artist, James Gilbert, featuring nine new sculptures, two site-specific works and a video that addresses current intentional destructive actions that destroy architecturally important and significant cultural heritage sites.

Gilbert writes of his work - "Natural disasters and accidents are inevitable but it is human aggression where we experience the loss of art, architecture and historical sites that are neither designed nor intends to be destroyed. To deliberately eradicate identity is to eradicate art and objects of symbolic meaning. We have witnessed systematic destruction of heritage as an attempt to destroy cultural diversity through religious or ideological reasoning, political agenda, activism or cultural curation.

The sledgehammer, bullet, bomb, water or earthquake perform the destruction – l wanted to reimagine an object that is simultaneously a symbol and protectant. When building barricades for fortification in front of and around culturally significant objects and architecture they then become the new identity and description for the object they are protecting. Through the use of common art making materials: canvas, marble and wood, they are reinterpreted as devices to defend, deter or lessen destruction but also form a new autonomous work to be visited, viewed and contemplated."

Gilbert's work involves the labor-intensive process of hand sewing and hand-dyeing hundreds of visually dense canvas objects that weigh upon or support fragile wood structures that remind us of relief carvings, elaborately designed doors, buttresses, architectural joints and bridges. Two site-specific works will be built directly into the architecture of intentionally destroyed gallery walls.

Sledgehammer. Bullet. Bomb Screen Shot From VideoJames Gilbert's has been awarded international grants to produce work in the United States, Denmark and Columbia and residencies at Centrak: The University of Texas, Dallas and Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Omaha. His work has been exhibited at museums, galleries and universities in The United States, China, South Korea, Colombia, Denmark and has been reviewed in such publications as Artforum, Artillery, Hyperallergic and Sculpture Magazine.

Exhibition Dates:
September 24th through October 21st
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 3, 2015 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Artists:
Carolyn Castaño, Francesco Siqueiros, and El Nopal Press

The 3rd SUR:biennial will take place at several venues in Los Angeles: Manhattan Beach Art Center, Torrance Art Museum, Rio Hondo College Art Gallery, and Cerritos College Art Gallery. In addition to the four main gallery exhibitions, the organizing institutions will host a series of panels, performances, and events in conjunction with this year’s Biennial.

The 3rd SUR:biennial will showcase recent works of local and international artists who have been influenced by the cultures and artistic traditions of Mexico and Central and South America. Unlike many recent exhibitions of Latino/a, Mexican, Mexican-American, or Chicano/a art, the SUR:biennial seeks to explore notions of globalization and exchange that take place in the ambiguous geographical, cultural, and artistic borderlands between Los Angeles and “the South,” regardless of the artist’s nationality. Artists confirmed for the 3rd SUR:biennial are Ismael de Anda III, Juliane Backmann, Juan Bastardo, Guillermo Bert, Daniela Campins, Carolyn Castano, Anibal Catalan, Beatriz Cortez, Carribean Fragoza, Ed Gomez, Romeo Guzmán, Lorenzo Hurtado Segovia, Daniel Lara, Patrick Martinez, Rebeca Méndez, Gerardo Monterrubio, Jimena Sarno, Francesco Siqueiros, El Nopal Press, Eloy Torrez, and Nina Waisman / CUBO (Jennifer Donovan, Gabriela Torres Olivares, Nina Waisman, Flora Wiegmann).

Curators James MacDevitt, Robert Miller, Esmeralda Montes, and Max Presneill carefully selected venues not only on the east side of Los Angeles where Latino/a culture has historically flourished, but in the South Bay and coastal communities, which have not been typical spaces for the display of Latino/a art. This year’s program will incorporate a wide range of artistic forms – painting, craft, new media, and performance – all of which demand a shift in the viewers’ perception of the “SUR.”

Been There-Done That-Doing This, an exhibition by Jim Murray
Landscape Series (1986 to 2005): Ventura County 2004 Pastel on PaperCurated by Ann Martin
Exhibition Dates:
April 30 through June 7, 2015
Opening Reception: Thursday, April 30, 2015 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Artist Talk: May 16, 2015 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM

The Manhattan Beach Art Center and the City of Manhattan Beach present, BEEN THERE-DONE THAT-DOING THIS, featuring a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings executed by Jim Murray over the last four decades. Curated by Ann Martin, BEEN THERE-DONE THAT-DOING THIS will draw from three distinct series. Though seemingly different at first glance, they are in fact, united by a common commitment to a particular and personal imagery, that at its core, speaks consistently to the specificity of both time and place.

The series BEEN THERE, presents in text the early development and major influences that were set in place coming out the graduate program at Art Center College of Design. The series DONE THAT, highlights the first two series, the large scale photo realist figurative paintings from the years 1972 to 1985, as well as the more intimate charcoal and pastel landscape drawings from the years 1986 to 2005. The series DOING THIS, focuses on the most recent landscape paintings and drawings from the years 2005 to 2015. The latest works concentrate on the winter months in Yosemite National Park and current work from The Southwest.

One of the goals of this exhibition is to focus on the art, the artist and to seek out those basic issues that are common to all three bodies of work.

After graduating from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Jim Murray has been a resident of Manhattan Beach since 1972. He was tenured Associate Professor of Art as well as Gallery Director at Mount St. Mary’s College in Brentwood. He has taught at several colleges and universities in the region and is currently on faculty at the Palos Verdes Art Center where he continues to conduct a gallery/museum visitation class. He frequently lectures and curates exhibitions and has been exhibited in over a hundred exhibitions locally and nationally over these past four decades. Mr. Murray is a recipient of the California Arts Council’s Artists Fellowship in the Visual Arts and has chaired several boards and committees including the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art and the Art Advisory Council for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
