How to Report an Absence
Your child doesn't need to be picked-up by Afterschool REC staff today? No problem! *You will need to text or leave a voicemail with the corresponding phone number to your child's school. Please see the example below on how to text the Afterschool REC phone:

Please note that the two numbers above are not additional numbers to text or call for an absence with the Afterschool REC Program. The two numbers provided will allow you to speak with an Afterschool REC Leader during program hours only.
Late Pick-Up
Whoops! Life happens and sometimes a child may get picked up late. Please note these procedures and policies are the same for Afterschool REC, REC Camps, and REC Summer Camp.
- 5 Minutes Late: REC Leaders will call each number on the child's Emergency Contact List
- 10 Minutes Late: REC Leaders will call the After School Supervisor and Watch Commander
- 30 Minutes Late: REC Leaders will call the Manhattan Beach Police Department and start making arrangements to turn over custody of the child. A copy of the child's contact information will also be given to the Police Department.
In the event your child does not get picked-up 30 minutes after the program ends, you may pick your child up at the Manhattan Beach Police Department located at 420 15th Street in Manhattan Beach. Please call (310) 802-5140.

Afterschool REC Refund Policy and Procedure
No refunds will be given for the Afterschool REC Membership. If you would like to withdraw from the Afterschool REC Extended Care Program, you may do so 15 days prior to the 1st of the following month. You must contact David Ibarra, (310) 802-5419, and submit a Refund Request Form (PDF). Any requests or forms turned in after the deadline may be subject to a $25.00 administrative fee, rejected, and may be charged the full amount for the upcoming month.

Donations
In order to obtain additional equipment and continually develop new activities, the REC Program does accept donations! If you would like to donate equipment or a monetary donation, please contact David Ibarra, REC Supervisor (310) 802-5419.
Want to Get Involved?
The REC Program welcomes and encourages visits from parents at any time. Parents may participate in activities, with the Recreation Leader's approval, during the program. We also encourage parental participation in planning programs and providing suggestions how we can create a better community.
Helpful information for children, parents and guardians
From time to time, the Parks and Recreation Department will publish helpful information gathered from various sources for the parents and participants in the program. In a continued effort to "Go Green," the Parks and Recreation Department has decided to limit the number of printed publications and put all these documents in one place on the City's website. Safe, Clean and Green
The REC Program operates a safe, clean and green program. This means we value physical and emotional safety. We ask that children help keep the REC Program a safe place, that they are courteous and respectful of others and themselves. With these attributes, they are able to have fun in a safe environment.
We also value personal responsibility. The children are asked to help keep the REC Program a clean place. If they make a mess, they clean it up. They also put away the stuff they play with such as balls, games and craft supplies keeping a clean environment.
Finally, we value our physical and emotional environment. We ask that the children help keep the REC Program green and healthy; be nice to others; be healthy and be supportive of others; pick up their trash as well as trash they see on the ground; put litter in its place and recycle. Teaching them that they can have fun taking care of their environment.

The REC Program Joins Let's Move Campaign
We have joined First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign towards fighting childhood obesity. Studies have shown that every child should engage in 60 minutes of vigorous play every day to develop to a healthy weight. We strive to increase physical activity by providing playgrounds and community centers where they can play and be active after school. Our programs maintain a vibrant and challenging atmosphere to keep participants engaged.
MISSION STATEMENT
We Strengthen Community Image and Sense of Place:
Dedicated REC facilities and programs allow children to interact with each other locally. Camps and special events help build and support the relationships that are the foundation of a strong community.
We Support Economic Development:
By partnering with and supporting local businesses, REC programs create valuable, lasting relationships that support economic development within the community. Camps and special events draw participants from around the region, introducing new customers to our local businesses.
We Strengthen Safety and Security:
REC programs are specifically designed to provide a safe and enjoyable alternative to undesirable and criminal activities during high risk times for children. REC program staff are highly skilled and trained recreation professionals dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure environment for children.
We Promote Health and Wellness:
REC facilities in multiple locations offer easily accessible and affordable ways for children to remain socially and physically active. Participants are offered opportunities to take part in activities that strengthen them mentally and physically. Our programs stress the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles and creating healthy relationships that positively impact community wellness.
We Foster Human Development:
By encouraging participation in our programs and events, we foster physical and social development through physical activity and opportunities for children to meet new friends and interact with their friends and peers.
We Increase Cultural Unity:
The REC program embraces a diverse community and seeks to build cultural understanding and unity through activities and special events. Program participants are shown the value in building awareness of other cultures at a young age and the importance of cultural understanding in building a successful community.
We Protect Environmental Resources:
With locations convenient to local schools, the REC program offers easy access for students by foot or bicycle. Our programs utilize existing facilities and protect our local resources by preventing the need for destruction or further development of open spaces. We use high quality and reusable equipment and supplies and actively participate in recycling programs. Our program strives to promote responsible living and encourages children to seek new ways to lessen their impact on the community’s environment.
We Provide Recreational Experiences:
A balance of self-facilitated and organized activities provide an array of benefits to children and their community. REC offers activities and special events that are important as an end in themselves for personal enjoyment.
We Facilitate Community Problem Solving:
REC program staff possess the expertise needed to facilitate problem solving and to assist children in developing skills that will not only improve their experiences in our programs, but will also improve their ability to resolve future community issues.
