On December 27th, 1993, Manhattan Beach Police Officer Martin Lane Ganz, who had served for four years with the department, was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop. Officer Ganz had observed a motorist commit a traffic violation and pulled the vehicle over in the Manhattan Village Mall.
Officer Ganz, who normally worked as a motorcycle traffic officer, was serving on a holiday DUI patrol when he made the stop. As Officer Ganz walked towards the car, the driver exited and fired at Officer Ganz.
Officer Ganz’s funeral service took place on Monday, January 4th, 1994, at American Martyrs Catholic Church. Officer Ganz was laid to rest in Inglewood Memorial Cemetery.
Officer Ganz, who even during high school in Garden Grove knew he wanted to become a police officer, graduated from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Academy and began his career as a patrol officer with the Manhattan Beach Police Department on May 16th 1988. He will always be remembered for his skills working in the DUI enforcement program, and his love of working with the children in the community.
We will always remember Officer Martin Ganz.
