City's Franchised Hauler
Waste Management, Inc. has been the City's franchise waste hauler for all residential and commercial refuse through several exclusive franchise agreements for over thirty years. With the most recent awarded franchise agreement effective July 1, 2020, some new or updated services are included. Click here to view the new/updated services.

Rate Structures for Customers
- Single family residents pay for refuse service based on the size and quantity of their gray trash carts; recycling and organic waste (food/yard waste) carts continue to be no additional charge.
- Multi-family cart customers pay based on the number of dwelling units at the property - not the number of carts. Multi-family cart customers may have an unlimited number of trash, recycling and organics carts at their property without affecting cost.
- Multi-family bin customers pay based on the size, quantity and frequency of trash pick-ups at the property and the size and frequency of recycling pick-ups at the property.
-Commercial Business customers pay based on the size and quantity of carts/bins and frequency of trash and recycling pick-ups at the property; food waste carts/service continue at no additional charge.
Billing for Solid Waste Services
Effective July 1, 2020, Waste Management provides all solid waste billing for residents and businesses in Manhattan Beach. Click here to visit the City's Refuse Billing page for more information.
Trash (gray), Recycling (blue) and Organics-Food/Yard (green) Waste Cart and Bin Types
Semi-automated carts are offered in the following sizes:
- 20 gallon (residential trash only, new in 2020)
- 35 gallon (trash, recycling, organic and commercial green waste)
- 65 gallon (trash, recycling, organic and commercial green waste)
- 95 gallon (trash, recycling, organic and commercial green waste)
Commercial bins are offered in the following sizes:
- 2 cubic yard (trash and recycling)
- 3 cubic yard (trash and recycling)
- 4 cubic yard (trash and recycling)
- 6 cubic yard (trash and recycling)
Collection Service
Residential
All residential customers receive collection services once per week. The city is divided into five sections for residential collection from Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Carts may be set out for collection 10:00 AM the day before collection through 10:00 AM the day after collection. Carts should be kept on the residents' property and out of public view when not placed for curbside collection.
Commercial Business
All commercial business customers determine their own collection frequency. Waste Management performs collection between 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM.

Where Does It All Go?
Trash
Waste Management disposes the trash (gray cart) from Manhattan Beach at the El Sobrante Landfill, which is owned and operated by Waste Management.
Recycling
Recycling (blue cart) is taken to a Waste Management Recycle America "MRF" or "Material Recovery Facility" to be sorted by material type, then baled and sold as markets are feasible.
Residential Organic (food/yard/soiled paper waste)
Residential Organic waste - food, yard waste and soiled paper (green cart), beginning July 1, 2020, can be MIXED, UNBAGGED, and is transported to a composting facility. NO plastic/bioplastic of any kind allowed.
Commercial (only) Food
Commercial Business food waste is directly transported to Waste Management's CORe Facility in Orange, CA, where it is converted to an Engineered BioSlurry, transported to LA County's Wastewater Treatment Plant in Carson, CA for anaerobic digestion and converted to energy.
Commercial (only) Green waste (landscaping)
Commercial landscaping material is transported to the Transfer Station for raking to remove small amounts of debris. Contaminated green waste must be landfilled; green waste free of debris is transported to organic farms for agricultural cover.
Popular Services
Organics: Food, Yard and Soiied Paper Waste Recycling
The City has offered a citywide (residential and commercial) food waste recycling program since the fall of 2015. The program is managed by the City's hauler, Waste Management. The cost for the program is already included in the monthly trash rate as part of core services; there is no additional charge to utilize the program. Backyard Composting
Are you a Manhattan Beach resident interested in backyard composting to convert your organic waste to nutrient-rich soil on your property? If so, this is the place for you! The City of Manhattan Beach offers residents low cost, high quality backyard composting bins at a discount year-round by contacting Waste Management Customer Service at (310) 830-7100 or at one of the three City-sponsored composting classes.
Bulky-Item Pick-Up
Single and Multi-family Residents
As part of improved service offerings, beginning July 1, 2020, Manhattan Beach single and multi-family residents may schedule (6) six bulky item pick-ups each year, with (3) three items allowed per pick-up, for an annual total of (18) eighteen items per household. The City's hauler, Waste Management will collect materials including but limited to appliances, furniture, sports equipment, mattresses, and 1 cubic yard equivalent of yard waste (i.e. landscaping). Pick-up is scheduled on a resident's regular collection day, but a separate truck comes by to remove the bulky-items (not the standard collection truck).
Commercial Businesses
Commercial businesses may schedule bulky-item pick-ups for a fee.

Temporary Bin Rental
Cleaning out the garage? Moving? A temporary bin rental may be needed. Temporary bin rentals must be acquired by the City's hauler, Waste Management, for all uses that do not require a City permit (such as major clean-outs and moving). The temporary bin rental is for up to 10 days and includes one "service." Additional service of the bin may be scheduled at an additional charge. The bin must be kept inside private property lines at all times. The pricing for the 10 day rental is determined by the fee schedule in the City's franchise agreement. Contact Waste Management directly to reserve the rental at (310) 830-7100. Waste Management will bill residents directly for this service and residents will pay the bill directly to Waste Management; it will not be included on the City Utility bill and no payment is due to the City for this service.

Learn more about what you can put in your recycling containers. Many changes have taken place in the recycling industry over the last couple decades, and recycling practices can change over time. Recyclable items should be DRY, CLEAN and UNBAGGED.
