Desalination or Conservation?

A Public Forum on the Pros and Cons of Desalination

The West Basin Municipal Water District, the major supplier of freshwater in the South Bay, is considering a full-scale desalination plant on the Redondo Beach waterfront. Ocean-water desalination is the process of removing salt, other minerals and impurities from ocean water so that it can be used to supplement the existing water supply. While the process of desalination is one way to increase the amount of freshwater, it also comes with several economic and environmental concerns. Download the Pacific Institute's Desalination Report for more information.
