TRANSFER STATION
Waste Management’s Carson Transfer Station (or T-Station) is where all trash is hauled before it goes to the Waste Management landfill in Corona, California. Trash is collected here before being landfilled because it is more time and carbon efficient to haul a smaller number of trucks that hold more waste than to send all of the collection trucks back and forth from Manhattan Beach (and other cities) directly to the landfill.

At the Transfer Station, Waste Management also collects, sorts, and processes green waste before it is sent to a green waste facility to become mulch (a form of recycling). There is also a sort line and other sorting processes where Waste Management recovers as much waste as possible for recycling before it is landfilled.

MATERIAL RECOVERY CENTER (MRF)
Waste Management’s Material Recovery Facility in Pico Rivera is where much of the recyclables collected in the South Bay are sent for processing. Here, everything that is placed in the blue recycling cart is separated and baled, before it is ultimately returned to the marketplace to become new products. At this tour, you can see how and why various types of materials can (or cannot) be recycled.

2012 tour dates will be announced at a later time.
