Are you interested in learning about the trash that drains onto our local beaches? A group of students working with Surfrider will share their findings at the VOICE meeting on Monday, June 2nd.
South Bay Surfrider's Teach and Test is a hands-on program that works with students to teach them the value of being proactive in regards to protecting the health of the beaches and ocean from pollution. It is a citizen science program that involves students in real science and environmental issues to generate useful data that can be used to talk to South Bay cities about their beach trash problems. The data is also used to support the banning of single use bags and food-related expanded polystyrene foam.
Under this program, the group collects trash from two storm drains that discharge on the beaches. Trash collected from the Herondo Street drain in Hermosa Beach, and the 27th Street drain in Manhattan Beach is summarized in the Waste Characterization Study.
The students will present their waste characterization findings at the June 2nd VOICE meeting to be held in the Manhattan Beach Public Works Training Room at 7:00 PM. Please visit the VOICE website for details.
