The City of Manhattan Beach invites the business community to join the conversation about homelessness in Manhattan Beach at our meeting on March 13th from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in the Police/Fire Conference Room.
In November 2017, the Los Angeles County Homelessness Initiative allocated one-time funding to support planning efforts made by cities in the Los Angeles Continuum of Care. Manhattan Beach received one of these grants and has begun gathering feedback from the community on the current challenge of combating and preventing homelessness in our region. The document created by the City will serve as a road map for approaching this issue both locally and regionally.
Overview
- There are 57,794 persons in Los Angeles County who are homeless on a given night.
- Los Angeles County voters passed Measure H in 2017, raising $355 million annually in sales taxes, to be spent on services for homeless people.
- City of Los Angeles voters approved Proposition HHH, a $1.2 billion bond to build new permanent supportive housing for homeless people.
- LA County is using all available services and resources.
- United Way is leading involvement of the business community.
Manhattan Beach scope of homelessness
- Six homeless people counted in January, 2017.
- Living in vehicles and makeshift shelters; one on the street.
- None were in shelters; none were youth.
- We believe numbers increase during the summer months.
- Numbers for 2018 are expected to increase.
