Basic Techniques of Drawing

Coloring Corner

Every major news outlet from CNN to CBS News is reporting about the adult coloring phenomenon. What  once was an activity that kept so many of us entertained as children, is now resurfacing as a trend adults are coming to love. Therapeutic elements parents sought to keep their children calm or entertained before dinner, are now being applied to adults, to help distract them from the daily pressures of life. Plus it's fun!
That said, here are the top 7 benefits of coloring for adults:

1. Your brain experiences relief by entering a meditative state
2. Stress and anxiety levels have the potential to be lowered
3. Negative thoughts are expelled as you take in positivity
4. Focusing on the present helps you achieve mindfulness
5. Unplugging from technology promotes creation over consumption
6. Coloring can be done by anyone, not just artists or creative types
7.  It’s a hobby that can be taken with you wherever you go

Coloring books will be available in the OASIS room. Feel free to color a page or two take it home. Pens, pencils, and other coloring implements are available in the Older Adult Program office.

Be Our Guest Program by Manhattan Beach Unified School District 

In partnership with Manhattan Beach Parks & Rec, the Be Our Guest program invites older adult residents in Manhattan Beach 55 and older to attend performances at Manhattan Beach Unified schools. 

Eligible older adults need to sign-up for a special pass that will allow them to attend the events for FREE! 

This can be done at the Manhattan Beach Parks & Rec Older Adults Program Office located at Joslyn Community Center, Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For more information, contact staff at (310) 802-5449.

Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple, the North American Regional Headquarters of Fo Guang Shan, was built to serve as a spiritual and cultural center for those interested in learning more about Buddhism and Chinese culture. The South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG) currently offers a home sharing program designed to assist the growing number of older residents who may need support to remain living in their homes, as well as aid individuals close to homelessness due to high rents and low wages. The goal of the program is facilitate finding potential homeowners and home seekers to match through collaboration with local senior villages, service providers, and faith based and community organizations. Dine & Discover

On the Move Riders Program (OTMRP) works to empower older adults with the information and confidence to travel on fixed-route transportation, by providing one-on-one and/or group travel training, informational transit tours, and safety education presentations. Through our regional Older Adult Transportation Pop-Up events, Transportation Expo, and Raised on Records Concert we strive to spread the word on our program and the value in learning how to travel on public transportation. Through these efforts, OTMRP strives to remove barriers and enhance mobility among the older adult population.

Taste of Tango (Living Tango) Workshop - FREE

Ilona Glinarsky has have been teaching for 28 years all over LA (especially throughout the South Bay) and organizing some of the largest social dance events. She is a proud nominee of the Excellence in Arts award (city of Torrance, 2024). Mindful Stretching with Timilie (BCHD)

This class begins with stretching followed by mindfulness for 20 minutes. Stretching is vital as it lengthens and elongates muscles improving flexibility and elasticity. Stretching has many benefits including improving posture, decreasing back pain, and preventing injury. Our mindfulness portion will give us the opportunity to drop down into stillness with an emphasis on breath and presence.  Mindful awareness adds insight to our overall existence. The practice increases vitality, encourages health and wellness, decreases stress, promotes inner peace and calm, and has even been proven to reduce blood pressure and boost immune function. This combination of stretching and mindfulness practice will leave you feeling relaxed, calm, and serene. Instructor: Timilie Losq, Beach Cities Health District.

Mindfulness with Timilie (BCHD)

Feeling stressed, overwhelmed? Would you like to have greater focus, a feeling of relaxed awareness, relief  from the experience of fight or flight? Scientific evidence shows Mindfulness can help with these life  challenges. Mindfulness is a training of our attention to remain in the present moment. You can sit in a chair, cushion, or on the floor. Instructor: Timilie Losq, Beach Cities Health District.

Agility, Balance and Coordination

Agility is the ability to change the direction of the body in an efficient and effective manner, requiring a combination of balance and coordination. This class will be using common dumbbell weights, and resistance bands to perform fun coordination exercises that utilize eye-hand coordination working towards greater stationary and moving body balance. Two classes are now offered.

Beginner Line Dancing with Rhonda

The Beginner Line Dance provides all students the opportunity to move to music and express themselves in ways other activities do not. This course will introduce basic line dance steps and many different line dances will be taught to multiple music genres. Class will review dances learned from previous week and will move to more advanced level dances as the session progresses. Everyone is welcome and no partner is required. Instructor: Rhonda Diamond

Arthritis Foundation is Back!! - with Nicky

The Arthritis Foundation Exercise program is designed to help people with arthritis maintain joint flexibility, muscle strength, and reduce the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. Taught by an Arthritis Foundation certified instructor who receives detailed and ongoing training to work with people and arthritis.

Dance, Flow 'N Fun with Nicky

Improve posture, balance, coordination, and grace through tailored warm up exercises followed by simple choreographed dance sequences in order to get the endorphins flowing, release stress and have fun! No previous dance experience necessary. Instructor: Nicola Bowie

Keeping active is key to maintaining your vitality and independence. Our Senior Fit class, led by Carmen Osterling, a Psychology major with years of experience in the South Bay, is designed to help you stay limber, ease those aches and pains, and keep your joints in working order, with special attention to your spine.
With Carmen’s unique understanding of both body and mind, you’ll be in good hands. Join us for a friendly, supportive class that’ll have you feeling your best!

Yoga for Strength, Balance, and Flexibility by Teri (Hatha Yoga)

As we age, muscles become weak, posture starts curving forward, and we are prone to falling. When muscles are strong and flexible, balance and posture improves!  We move better and we feel more confident. Come as you are and leave class feeling strong and alive in your body!  Chairs are used for part of the class. Zumba For Adults

Easy to follow choreography for adults looking for a modified Zumba class with same great music and original loved moves at a lower intensity. Class focuses on all elements of fitness: cardiovascular, muscular conditioning, flexibility, balance and mainly fun! Instructor: Sunny Averbukh

Men's Senior (Men 60+ and Women 45+) Slo-Pitch League

The Men's Senior Slo-Pitch League is for men ages 60 years and older. The league runs from March through November in which various games and practices are conducted throughout the week. Come play BINGO with the Manhattan Beach Senior Club on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Refreshments are free. Prizes are awarded.

Exercise your mind by playing exciting Bingo games such as The Love Letter, Fly Swatter with One Dead Fly, Crazy Kite, One High Heel, Rock Around the Clock, and She's a Grand Old Flag.

The White Elephant Sale is also going on at the same time as Bingo. You can shop and find jewelry, clothes, purses, lotions, frames, playing cards, mugs, vases, tote bags, wine openers, and occasional appliances, etc. "One person's junk is another person's treasure." Come and explore...

The Manhattan Beach Senior Club also sells coffee and donuts during the Hometown Fair weekend in October. We then donate the proceeds to three South Bay charities every December.

The senior citizens’ clubs organize activities as autonomous groups. Activities are run and supported by members. Monday's 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM For more information about this activity, please call the Older Adults Program at (310) 802-5430.

We've added 2 new tables inside Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday. Inside tables are not available on Thursdays. The outside tables will be available Monday to Friday. Grab your paddles/balls and bring some friends and get a game going for some friendly competition.

Drop in on one of the Saturdays listed below to the Joslyn Community Center for coffee and an opportunity to talk with tech-savvy Mira Costa High School students. Learn all about social media sites, adding apps, security and more!

Seating is limited and reservations will be taken on a first call first served basis.

For reservations and/or more information, please call (310) 545-3500. Dial-A-Ride will be available for those needing a ride to and from the restaurants.

Things to Remember

• Dinner will last approximately one to two hours.
• Payments are due prior to ordering.
• Cash payment and exact change is highly recommended.
• Credit card payments are subject to additional charges.
• Receipts are not always available.
• Menu choices and prices are predetermined by the restaurants.
• Ordering items that are not offered on the prefix menu will incur costs and gratuity at the regular price.

OASIS is open every day except for Sunday, for games, puzzles, and social interaction. Come peruse our newly organized library. Bring your friends or meet new friends at the OASIS for a few hours of fun and social time. Coffee will be provided but we ask that you do not bring food.

The OASIS (Older Adults and Seniors Interactive Space) Room, located at the Joslyn Community Center (1601 Valley Drive) opened in 2007 and is a daytime activity space where adults ages 55 and over can participate in recreation, socialization, educational, and fitness activities. The OASIS is also a resource center where you may find a variety of helpful and relevant services.

Parking Hours

Please note, parking along Valley Drive (between 15th Street and the crosswalk near the Tennis Courts) is limited to 4 hours (effective 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Saturday) as indicated by signage.

All OASIS participants must read the Rules of Conduct before using the OASIS room.

Joslyn Center Senior OASIS Room Code of Conduct

Welcome to the Joslyn Center Senior OASIS Room. This room is a daytime activity space where adults, ages 55 and above, can participate in recreation, socialization, educational and fitness activities, as well as find a variety of helpful, relevant services.

The City of Manhattan Beach is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for our participants, visitors and staff. To help ensure a supportive setting for all who attend, the following Code of Conduct was established.

It is imperative that all participants act appropriately while at the Joslyn Center Senior Southeast Room or any of its satellite locations. This means that people should treat each other with dignity and respect at all times.

The following is not acceptable conduct:

• Profanity, vulgarity, or explicit sexual language
• Hate speech or epithets (e.g. racial, ethnic, sexist, homophobic and religious slurs) 
• Promotion of or engaging in any illegal activities 
• Participating while under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs 
• Harassment of any kind to anyone 
• Fighting, physical abuse, challenging others to fight, destroying or damaging property 
• Be flexible in accepting alternate facility assignments or modification to schedules due to maintenance, scheduling conflicts and emergency situations
• Should you wish to circulate a petition or survey, promote or sell tickets for an organization or event that is not sponsored by the City, seek the approval of the Older Adults Coordinator
• Tampering with Joslyn Center Senior Southeast Room equipment

Each participant should be able to socialize and interact with others in an independent positive manner. Everyone should treat those they encounter in the same manner that they would like to be treated.

Failure to comply with the above will be addressed in the following manner:

1. First Incident: Counseling with Older Adults Coordinator followed by letter to the participant. Copy of letter will be sent to Recreation Services Manager.
2. Second Incident: Counseling with a verbal warning from the Older Adults Coordinator and Recreation Services Manager followed by a letter to the participant.
3. Third Incident: Suspension (up to 1, 2, or 3 months and/or permanent expulsion, depending on the severity of the offense) from attending any City of Manhattan Beach older adults activities, documented by letter to the participant.

Participants returning to the Joslyn Center Senior Southeast Room in violation of the suspension or expulsion order will be asked to leave by staff. Should this approach be unsuccessful, public safety personnel (police) will be called to assist and protect the safety and welfare of staff and participants.

The nine-member committee works in conjunction with the Parks and Recreation Department’s Older Adults Program to make recommendations regarding the delivery of senior programs, activities and policies. For more information, please visit the Senior Advisory Committee webpage. 

SAC will be hosting the Manhattan Beach City Council Candidates Forum on September 30, 2024. 
Manhattan Beach residents will vote for its new City Council members in the general election on November 5. The three seats are currently held by Mayor Joe Franklin (who is running for re-election) and Council members Richard Montgomery and Steve Napolitano (both of whom are not running again). Members elected to the City Council serve for a four-year term.

Senior Advisory Committee member Diane Campisi facilitates. Discussion topics regarding women’s issues are torn from the front pages of the newspaper, magazines, and other forms of media. Participants are welcome to bring their own discussion topics or everyday concerns as well. Many topics are discussed except religion and politics. Everyone is welcome.

Blankets of Love

Please bring your needles and yarn. The mission: cover babies with warmth, love, and blessings. Founded in love and hope for every newborn! Blankets of Love South Bay is working with Good+Foundation of Los Angeles to donate a handmade blanket to wrap each newborn as the baby leaves the hospital. To those wishing to participate in this cause – it’s simple! All that is asked of you is to crochet or knit with your own baby yarn, a simple newborn baby blanket about 36 inches x 36 inches – this is a standard newborn size. No pattern or ‘fancy’ stitches required! This is great for beginners - you will enjoy this and learn as you go! For experienced knitters, keep it simple and just have fun. Any color is acceptable and almost any type of baby yarn is fine – just so it is soft and washable.
